WhatsApp saves every photo, video, voice note and document you receive, so it can fill your phone. Open Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage to see the biggest files and delete what you don't need, in a few taps.
See what is taking space
- Android: ⋮ › Settings. iPhone: Settings at the bottom.
- Tap Storage and data › Manage storage.
- At the top you see how much space WhatsApp uses. Below are groups like Larger than 5 MB and Forwarded many times, and then each chat sorted by size.
Delete big and forwarded files
- Tap Larger than 5 MB. Videos are usually the biggest.
- Tap and hold one file, then tap the others you want to remove (or use Select all).
- Tap the bin icon › Delete items.
- Do the same in Forwarded many times; these are usually "good morning" pictures and viral videos.
The messages stay in the chat; only the files are removed from your phone.
Clean one chat or group
- In Manage storage, tap a chat at the bottom of the list (busy groups are usually on top).
- Select files and delete them, or sort by Newest, Oldest or Largest.
- To empty a whole chat, open the chat › ⋮ › More › Clear chat (Android), or chat name › Clear Chat (iPhone). Leave "Delete starred messages" unticked to keep important ones.
Stop it filling up again
- Turn off auto-download so files download only when you tap them: see media auto-download.
- Hide media from your gallery for busy groups: chat info › Media visibility › No (Android) or Save to Photos › Never (iPhone).
- Use disappearing messages in groups full of forwards (see disappearing messages).
- Leave or mute groups you never read (see exit a group).
Before deleting, save what matters
Photos you want to keep, like family pictures or bills, can be starred (press and hold › star) or saved to Google Photos/iCloud first. Deleted WhatsApp files can't be brought back unless they are in a backup.
If it doesn't work
- Phone still full after deleting: on Android, photos may still be in your Gallery's Recently deleted / Trash for 30 days; empty it. On iPhone check Photos › Recently Deleted.
- WhatsApp says the phone is full and won't open: delete other big apps or videos from the phone first, then open WhatsApp and clean up.
- "Clear cache" in Android settings: safe to do. Never tap Clear data / Clear storage for WhatsApp without a backup; it logs you out and can lose chats.
Safety tip
Avoid "cleaner" or "booster" apps that promise to free space; many show ads or collect data. WhatsApp's own Manage storage is enough.
This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
