How to Leave (Exit) a WhatsApp Group Quietly

To leave a group, open it, tap the group name and choose Exit group. These days WhatsApp tells only the group admins, not every member, so leaving is quiet. If you just want peace, you can also mute the group and stay in it.

Who finds out when you leave

  • The group admins see that you left.
  • Other members don't get a message in the chat, but anyone can look at the group's Past participants list in group info and see that you left (for a limited time, about 60 days).
  • Nobody is told if you only mute or archive the group.

Exit on Android

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Tap ⋮ (top right) › More › Exit group. Or tap the group name and scroll to the bottom › Exit group.
  3. Tap Exit to confirm.

Exit on iPhone

  1. Open the group and tap the group name at the top.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Exit Group.
  3. Tap Exit Group again to confirm.

On WhatsApp Web or the computer app: open the group, click the group name, scroll down and click Exit group.

Delete the group from your chat list

After you exit, the chat stays in your list with the old messages. To remove it, open group info again and tap Delete group, or press and hold the group in the chat list and tap the bin icon. Media saved to your gallery stays unless you tick the option to delete it too.

Want to stay but stop the noise? Mute it

  1. Open the group and tap the group name.
  2. Tap Notifications › Mute notifications on Android, or Mute on iPhone.
  3. Choose 8 hours, 1 week or Always.

You can also archive it so it moves out of your main list. See pin, archive and mute chats.

Stop people adding you to groups again

  1. Go to Settings › Privacy › Groups.
  2. Choose My contacts or My contacts except.... Then strangers can't add you directly; they can only send you an invite you may ignore.

If it doesn't work

  • No Exit option: you have already left, or you were removed. Use Delete group instead.
  • You are the only admin: when the last admin leaves, WhatsApp picks another member as admin. If you care about the group, make someone admin before leaving.
  • You keep being added back: change the Groups privacy setting above and, if it's a spam group, report it (group info › Report group).

Safety tip

If a group shares scams, adult content or threats, use Report group before leaving. The last few messages are sent to WhatsApp for review, and it helps protect other members.
