A WhatsApp group call lets up to 32 people talk together by voice or video. Start it from a group chat, from the Calls tab, or by sharing a call link that people can tap to join.
Start a group call from a group chat
- Open the group.
- Tap the phone icon for voice or the video camera icon for video.
- On Android, choose the members you want to ring (or all), then tap the call button. On iPhone, the group may be rung directly or you pick members first, depending on group size.
- In big groups, members get a notice to Join instead of a full ring, so they can come in when free.
Start a group call from the Calls tab
- Android: Calls › new call button › New group call › pick up to 31 contacts › tap the phone or camera icon.
- iPhone: Calls › new call icon › New Group Call › pick contacts › tap the call type.
Add someone during a call
During a one-to-one or group call, tap the add participant icon (a person with a plus), choose the contact and tap Add.
Use a call link
- Open Calls and tap Create call link (Android) or Create Call Link (iPhone).
- Choose Voice or Video.
- Tap Send link via WhatsApp, Copy link or Share link.
- Anyone with WhatsApp who taps it can join. To plan a call for later, recent versions also let you create an Event in a group (attach menu 📎 or + › Event) and, on some versions, schedule a call from the Calls tab.
Join a call that already started
If you missed the ring, open the group or Calls tab and tap Join while the call is still going. The chat shows that a call is in progress.
Good habits in group calls
- Mute your microphone when you are not speaking to stop background noise.
- Use earphones to avoid echo.
- For video calls with many people, use Wi-Fi; video uses a lot of data.
- Screen sharing is available on recent versions: tap the screen-share icon during a video call.
If it doesn't work
- Can't add more people: the call has reached 32 participants.
- Someone can't join: they may have an old WhatsApp version, a weak connection, or they blocked you.
- Echo or noise: ask everyone not speaking to mute.
- Video freezes: turn your own camera off for a while to save bandwidth.
Safety tip
Anyone with a call link can join, so share it only with the people you mean to invite. Don't post call links publicly. If a stranger joins, the person who started the call can remove them, or simply end the call and make a new link.
This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
