WhatsApp Notifications Not Coming? Fix Late or Missing Alerts

Most missing notifications come from phone settings, not WhatsApp: battery saver stopping the app, notifications turned off, or a muted chat. Check the list below in order; the first three steps fix most phones.

1. Check inside WhatsApp

  1. Open Settings › Notifications.
  2. Make sure Message notifications, Group notifications and call ringtone are on, with a sound chosen (Android: Conversation tones on; iPhone: Show Notifications on).
  3. If unsure, tap ⋮ › Reset notification settings (Android) or Reset Notification Settings at the bottom (iPhone).
  4. Check the chat itself is not muted: a muted chat shows a crossed speaker icon in the chat list. Open it › name › Notifications/Mute › Unmute.

2. Allow notifications in phone settings

  • Android: phone Settings › Apps › WhatsApp › Notifications › turn on All WhatsApp notifications (and each category inside it).
  • iPhone: Settings › Notifications › WhatsApp › turn on Allow Notifications, and tick Lock Screen, Notification Centre and Banners. Turn on Sounds.

3. Stop the battery saver killing WhatsApp (Android)

  1. Phone Settings › Apps › WhatsApp › Battery.
  2. Choose Unrestricted (or Don't optimise/No restrictions).
  3. Also in Mobile data/Data usage, turn on Background data and allow data usage while Data Saver is on.

Xiaomi/Redmi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and some Samsung phones have extra savers. Look for Autostart and turn it on for WhatsApp, and lock WhatsApp in the recent-apps screen (pull it down or tap the lock icon).

4. iPhone extras

  • Turn off Focus/Do Not Disturb or allow WhatsApp in it (Control Centre, moon icon).
  • Settings › General › Background App Refresh › on for WhatsApp.
  • Low Power Mode can delay alerts.

5. Other causes

  • WhatsApp Web open on a computer: when you are active on the computer, your phone may stay quiet. That is normal.
  • Poor internet or Wi-Fi that sleeps: keep Wi-Fi on during sleep (Android Wi-Fi advanced settings).
  • Old app: update WhatsApp, then restart the phone.
  • Swiping WhatsApp away from recent apps on some phones stops it until you open it again.

Still nothing?

Ask a friend to send a test message while your screen is off. If it arrives only when you open WhatsApp, the battery saver is still blocking it. Repeat step 3. If messages don't arrive at all, see messages stuck on a clock or one tick.

Safety tip

Don't install "notification fixer" or "WhatsApp booster" apps from outside the Play Store or App Store. They are not needed and some are malware.

This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
