In India, WhatsApp lets you send money through UPI right inside a chat. You link the bank account connected to your mobile number, set or use your UPI PIN, and then pay with the ₹ or Payment option. You never need a PIN to receive money.
What you need
- An Indian bank account linked to the same mobile number you use on WhatsApp.
- That SIM in the phone (your bank verifies it by SMS).
- A debit card for that account if you have never set a UPI PIN before.
- This feature is for India only, and banks and limits follow UPI rules.
Set up payments
- Android: ⋮ › Payments. iPhone: Settings › Payments.
- Tap Add payment method (or Add new payment method) and accept the terms.
- Choose your bank from the list. WhatsApp verifies your number by SMS; allow it to send.
- Select the account. If you already have a UPI PIN for it (from another UPI app), you can use it. If not, enter the last 6 digits and expiry date of your debit card, then the OTP from your bank, and create a new UPI PIN.
Send money
- Open the chat with the person (they must also have payments set up, or you can pay to any UPI ID or scan a UPI QR code from the Payments screen).
- Tap the ₹ icon in the message box, or the attach (📎 or +) icon › Payment.
- Type the amount and a note, tap Next/Send.
- Enter your UPI PIN on the secure screen. Wait for the success message.
Receive money and check history
Money people send goes straight to your linked bank account. You don't press anything. Open Payments to see Payment history and your bank balance option.
If it doesn't work
- "Bank not found" or SMS verification fails: the bank account must be linked to this mobile number, and the SIM must be in this phone with SMS balance.
- Payment pending: wait; most pending payments complete or are refunded automatically within a few hours to a few days. Check the status in Payment history.
- Money cut, not received: tap the payment in history › Help/Contact support, and contact your bank with the UPI transaction ID.
- Wrong PIN many times: UPI blocks the PIN for some time; reset it with your debit card.
Safety tips (very important)
- Never enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A message saying "enter PIN to get your refund/prize" is always a scam.
- Never share your UPI PIN, card details or OTP with anyone, even someone claiming to be from WhatsApp or your bank.
- Don't scan QR codes sent by strangers; scanning is for paying, not receiving.
- Check the name shown before you pay. More scam types in scam messages.
