What is it?
The Sales Tax Calculator adds US sales tax to a price, or takes it out of a total, using your combined state and local rate.
Who is it for?
Shoppers in the US, travellers, online sellers selling to US customers, and students abroad.
How to use it
Enter the Price and the Sales tax rate (state + local), and choose whether The price is Before tax or Including tax. Read the Sales tax, Price before tax and Total with tax. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.
Find your combined rate
US sales tax is set by the state plus counties and cities: for example California 7.25% state rate, plus your city or county. The combined rate can be over 10% in some cities. Your state’s Department of Revenue website has a rate lookup by address.
Good to know
- Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (Alaska has some local taxes).
- Many states don’t tax groceries or medicines, or tax them at a lower rate.
- Online sellers usually charge tax based on the delivery address.
- Shelf prices in the US normally exclude sales tax, which is added at the till.
Errors and how to fix them
- Total differs from receipt: your city or county adds local tax; use the combined rate.
