Typing Tutor: How to Learn Touch Typing Lesson by Lesson

What is it?

The Typing Tutor teaches touch typing (typing with all ten fingers without looking) in 19 short lessons. It starts with the home keys F and J, adds two keys per lesson until the whole keyboard is covered, then capitals (Shift), numbers 0–9, common words and sentences. The next key lights up on the on-screen keyboard, coloured by the finger that should press it.

Who is it for?

Complete beginners, students who type with two fingers and want to switch, job seekers preparing for typing tests, and teachers running computer classes.

How to use it

  1. Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;, thumbs on the space bar.
  2. Open lesson 1 and type the line shown into the box, without looking down.
  3. Follow the lit-up key; the line above the keyboard says “Next: …” and which finger to use.
  4. Finish with 90% accuracy or more to pass, then press Next lesson ▶. Results show WPM, Accuracy, Mistakes and Time.
  5. Press Try a sample (watch) to see a line typed for you, with each key lighting up.

How speed is counted: every 5 correct characters (letters, spaces and punctuation) count as one word, divided by the minutes you typed. 250 correct characters in one minute is 50 WPM. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right.

Stars and a practice plan

1 star for passing, 2 stars for 20 WPM at 95% accuracy, 3 stars for 30 WPM at 97%. Practise 15–20 minutes a day: most people know every key in one or two weeks and reach 35–40 WPM in one to three months. If you must look, look at the on-screen keyboard, not your hands. Teachers: ask students to note their stars per lesson in a notebook, since results stay on each computer.

Errors and how to fix them

  • A letter turns red, or you see “Oops: press Backspace…”: you pressed the wrong key. Press Backspace and type the right one. Mistakes you leave in lower your accuracy.
  • Not done yet: accuracy was under 90%. Repeat the lesson slowly; speed comes later.
  • Nothing happens when I type: click or tap inside the typing box first so it has the cursor. Turn Caps Lock off, and close other apps that use keyboard shortcuts.
  • My best score or past results are gone: results are kept only in this browser on this device. Clearing browsing data, private/incognito mode or another browser or phone starts fresh.
