Typing Speed Test: Check WPM and Accuracy Correctly

What is it?

The Typing Speed Test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Choose a length (30 s, 1 min, 2 min or 5 min) and a kind of text (Passages, Words or Hard with capitals, punctuation and numbers). The clock starts with your first key; correct letters turn dark, mistakes red, and speed updates live.

Who is it for?

Anyone curious about their speed, job seekers preparing for data-entry or clerk typing tests (often 35–45 WPM at 95% accuracy), and teachers measuring class progress.

How to use it

  1. Pick the test length and the kind of text.
  2. Click the box (“The clock starts with your first key”) and type the text shown.
  3. Keep going until time runs out; fix mistakes with Backspace if you want them to count as correct.
  4. Read your result: net WPM, accuracy, raw speed and mistakes, with a verdict (“A steady, everyday speed.”, “Faster than most people.”, “Fast: a professional speed.”) and your best and last ten results.
  5. Press Try again for a new text.

How speed is counted: every 5 correct characters (letters, spaces and punctuation) count as one word, divided by the minutes you typed. 250 correct characters in one minute is 50 WPM. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right.

Worked example

In a 2-minute test you type 520 characters, 500 of them correct: net speed is 500 ÷ 5 ÷ 2 = 50 WPM, raw is 52 WPM, accuracy about 96%. Take two or three tests and use the average. Under 20 WPM the tool suggests the Typing Tutor; 50+ is fast and 70+ is expert. Job tests are often 5 minutes, so practise that length before an exam.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Paste doesn’t work: copying and pasting into the box is turned off so results are real.
  • WPM lower than another site: this test counts only correct characters (net WPM). Raw WPM, which includes mistakes, is shown too.
  • Nothing happens when I type: click or tap inside the typing box first so it has the cursor. Turn Caps Lock off, and close other apps that use keyboard shortcuts.
  • My best score or past results are gone: results are kept only in this browser on this device. Clearing browsing data, private/incognito mode or another browser or phone starts fresh.
