What is it?
The Spirit Level uses your phone’s tilt sensor to check whether a shelf, table, picture, washing machine or floor is level, lying flat or standing on its edge, with calibration for accuracy.
Who is it for?
Anyone hanging pictures or shelves, setting up washing machines or fridges, carpenters and handymen, and people checking floors or tiles.
How to use it
- Tap Start level.
- Lay the phone on the surface, or hold its edge against a shelf or frame.
- Adjust until the reading shows 0°. For accuracy, use Calibrate here on a known level surface; Reset calibration undoes it.
Calibrating
Place the phone on a surface you trust (a glass table checked with a real level), tap Calibrate here, then turn the phone 180° on the same spot: if it reads the same, it’s accurate. For big jobs (tiling, construction), use a proper level.
Errors and how to fix them
- “This device or browser has no tilt sensor. Open this page on a phone or tablet”
- Motion access was not allowed. Allow “Motion & Orientation” for this site and try again. On iPhone, the page asks once: tap Allow. If you tapped Don’t Allow, close the tab and open it again.
- Reading is off by a degree: phone cases with bumps tilt the phone; remove the case or calibrate.
Questions people ask
- Does it work on laptops? Only devices with a tilt sensor, usually phones and tablets.
