Sound Level Meter: How Loud Is It Around You in Decibels?

What is it?

The Sound Level Meter estimates how loud it is around you in decibels (dB) using your microphone, with lowest, highest and average levels and a live graph. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Who is it for?

People troubled by traffic, generators or loud neighbours, event organisers, teachers checking classroom noise, and anyone curious about noise levels.

How to use it

  1. Tap Start measuring and allow the microphone.
  2. Hold the phone at arm’s length, microphone towards the sound.
  3. Read the levels; Reset starts again. Optionally Calibrate with an Offset added to the microphone level.

Noise levels

  • Quiet room 30–40 dB, talk 60, busy traffic 70–85, loudspeakers and DJs 100+.
  • Long exposure above 85 dB can damage hearing.
  • In India, noise limits in residential areas are 55 dB by day and 45 dB at night; loudspeakers at night need permission.

This is an estimate, not a certified measurement for legal complaints.

Errors and how to fix them

  • This browser cannot use the microphone here. Try Chrome, Safari or Edge.
  • Permission blocked: allow the microphone in the browser’s site settings.
  • Readings seem low or high: phone microphones vary by several dB; compare with a real meter and set an offset.

Questions people ask

  • Can I use it as evidence? It’s an estimate; legal complaints need certified meters or official checks.
  • Does it record? No, nothing is recorded.
