Sort Lines: A to Z, by Length, Reverse and Shuffle

What is it?

Sort Lines puts any list in order. Choose the Order: A → Z, Z → A, Longest first, Shortest first, Reverse current order or Shuffle randomly.

Who is it for?

Teachers sorting student names, shopkeepers ordering item lists, writers alphabetising glossaries and references, and anyone who needs a list in order, or randomly shuffled, quickly.

How to use it

  1. Paste your list, one item per line.
  2. Pick the Order. Tick Trim spaces and Remove empty lines to tidy it as well.
  3. Copy or download the result.

How sorting works

  • Capitals don’t matter: “apple” and “Apple” sit together.
  • Numbers inside text sort naturally: “Class 2” comes before “Class 10”.
  • Accented letters sort with their plain letter (é with e). Hindi and other scripts sort in their own alphabet order.
  • Lines starting with a space or a symbol may sort first. Tick Trim spaces to avoid surprises.

Uses

  • Shuffle randomly for a fair draw, seating plan or quiz order. Every order is equally likely.
  • Reverse current order to flip a list that is upside down, without sorting it.
  • Sorting a list of dates as text only works for dates written year-first, like 2026-11-01.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser. Your text is kept in this browser only so it is still there if you reload, and Clear removes it.

Errors and how to fix them

  • A line sorts to the top unexpectedly: it starts with a space or symbol; tick Trim spaces.
  • Blank lines at the top: tick Remove empty lines.
  • Dates sort wrongly: write them as YYYY-MM-DD.
