Solitaire (Klondike): Rules, Tap to Move, Hint, Undo and Finish

What is it?

Solitaire here is Klondike, the patience game most people know. Build the seven columns into runs of alternating colours from King down, and move every card onto the four foundation piles, Ace to King in each suit. Choose Draw 1 for a relaxed game or Draw 3 for the classic challenge; it is built for phones, with tap-to-move instead of dragging.

Who is it for?

Anyone who enjoys a calm card game, older players who played it on early computers, and people on a break who want a short game.

How to use it

  1. Choose Draw 1 or Draw 3; a new game is dealt (or press New game).
  2. Tap a face-up card (it gets a yellow outline), then tap the column or foundation to move it.
  3. Tap a card twice to send it to the best place. With One tap sends a card home when it can go to the foundation ticked, one tap is enough for foundation moves.
  4. Tap the stock (top left) to turn cards; tap it when empty to start the pile again.
  5. Use Undo and Hint. When every card is face up, press Finish. Winning shows All cards are home.

Winning tips

  • Turn over face-down column cards as early as you can: that is where games are won.
  • Don’t rush cards to the foundations if you still need them to build columns.
  • Empty a column only when you have a King ready to move into it.
  • Hint shows a move, for example “Try moving the 7♥ onto column 4.” Most Draw 1 deals can be won with careful play; Draw 3 is harder.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “That move is not allowed.”: columns need one lower and the opposite colour (a red 9 on a black 10); only a King goes into an empty column; foundations build up by suit from Ace.
  • “That card has nowhere to go yet.”: you double-tapped a card with no legal place.
  • “Finish works once every card is face up and the stock is empty.”
  • “No moves left. Try Undo or a new game.”: some deals cannot be won; Undo lets you try another path.
  • The board is too small or cut off on my phone: turn the phone sideways, or zoom out the page; the board fits the width of the screen.
  • My game, best time or score has gone: it is kept only in this browser on this device. Private windows, clearing site data, or another browser or phone start fresh.
