Rhymes Reader: Nursery Rhymes and Hindi Rhymes Read Line by Line

What is it?

The Rhymes Reader is a read-along book of twenty rhymes for young children. It has English nursery rhymes, Hindi rhymes and new rhymes written for this site, and each line lights up as it is read aloud.

Who is it for?

Toddlers and pre-school children, parents at bath or bedtime, and nursery teachers who want rhymes on the board with the words visible.

How to use it

  1. Tap a rhyme in the list; the words appear line by line.
  2. Press đŸŽ” Read it to me: the line being read lights up.
  3. Tick Repeat to hear it again and again for sing-along.
  4. Press ■ Stop to end, or Try a sample to hear one straight away.

New rhymes to try

The hand-washing rhyme walks through each step (“Water on, then soap goes round
Fingers, thumbs and in between”), and the tooth-brushing rhyme covers up, down, round, top and bottom. Play them at the sink to make routines fun.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Clap along to the beat: rhythm helps with early reading.
  • Let your child say the rhyming word at the end of each line.
  • Point at each word as it lights up to build print awareness.
  • Traditional rhymes are old and free; the new rhymes are written for this site for you to enjoy at home and in class.

Errors and how to fix them

  • No sound when I tap: the words are read by your device’s own voice. Turn the volume up and silent mode off, and check that a text-to-speech voice is installed (Android: Settings â€ș Accessibility â€ș Text-to-speech; iPhone: Settings â€ș Accessibility â€ș Spoken Content; Windows: Settings â€ș Time & language â€ș Speech). Hindi words need a Hindi voice; without one the tool says them in English or stays quiet.
  • It speaks, it doesn’t sing: the device voice reads the rhyme in rhythm; it cannot sing a tune. Sing along yourself once your child knows the words.
  • Repeat won’t stop: press ■ Stop, or untick Repeat.
