Retirement Calculator: How Much You Need and How Much to Save

What is it?

The Retirement Calculator works out how much money you need when you retire, and the Monthly saving needed (SIP) to get there.

Who is it for?

Anyone aged 25–55 planning retirement, people checking if current savings are enough, and couples planning together.

How to use it

  1. Enter Your age now, Retire at and Plan until age (plan to 85–90; people live longer than they expect).
  2. Enter your Monthly expenses today, Inflation, Return before retirement, Return after retirement and the Savings you already have.
  3. Read Monthly expenses when you retire, Money needed at retirement, Your current savings will grow to and the monthly SIP needed.

Making good assumptions

  • Inflation: 6% is a reasonable long-term figure for India; medical costs often rise faster.
  • Return before retirement: 10–11% for a mostly equity portfolio is a cautious long-term guess. After retirement: 7–8%, because money moves to safer options.
  • Expenses: leave out costs that end (home loan, children’s fees) and add health insurance and medical costs.

Why the number is so big

With 6% inflation, ₹50,000 a month today becomes about ₹2.9 lakh a month in 30 years. The calculator assumes expenses rise with inflation every year of retirement and withdrawals are made at the start of each year.

EPF, PPF, NPS and pension income all count towards the goal: subtract them, or include them in savings.

This is an estimate to help you plan, not financial or tax advice. For big decisions, check the latest rules and talk to a qualified adviser.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Check the ages”: your age must be below retirement age, and retirement below the plan-until age.
