What is it?
The Post Office MIS Calculator shows the monthly income you get from the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme. It also shows the yearly income, the total interest over 5 years and the money you get back at the end.
Who is it for?
Retirees, homemakers and families wanting a fixed monthly income from savings.
How to use it
Enter the Amount invested, choose the Account type (Single (up to ₹9 lakh) or Joint (up to ₹15 lakh)) and the Interest rate. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.
How it works
Post Office Monthly Income Scheme: interest is paid every month for 5 years, then the deposit is returned. Interest is taxable. The rate is fixed for the 5 years when you open the account.
Rules to know
- Interest goes to your post office savings account every month. You can set up an automatic transfer to an RD.
- Closing early: not allowed in the first year; 2% deduction between 1 and 3 years; 1% after 3 years.
- No 80C benefit, and no TDS, but you must declare the interest in your return.
Who it suits
Retirees and families wanting steady monthly income with government backing. Seniors may get a higher rate from SCSS; compare both.
Check the current rate
Small savings rates are set by the Government of India every quarter. The calculator starts with the rate shown on it; check the latest rate on the India Post website or at your post office or bank before investing, and type it in.
This is an estimate to help you plan, not financial or tax advice. Read the scheme or policy documents, and ask a qualified adviser for big decisions.
Errors and how to fix them
- Amount over the limit: single accounts allow up to ₹9 lakh, joint up to ₹15 lakh.
