Post Office Time Deposit Calculator: 1, 2, 3 and 5-Year Returns

What is it?

The Post Office Time Deposit Calculator shows what a Post Office fixed deposit pays. It gives the interest rate, the interest each year, the total interest and the total you receive.

Who is it for?

Savers comparing post office FDs with bank FDs, especially in towns and villages.

How to use it

Enter the Amount and choose the Period: 1, 2, 3 or 5 years. Each period has its own rate. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.

How it works

Post Office Time Deposit: interest is worked out quarterly and paid once a year. The 5-year deposit counts under 80C (old regime). Rates on the tool are for the current quarter; check before you invest.

Compared with bank FDs

  • Post office deposits are backed by the Government of India. Bank FDs are insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank by DICGC.
  • Bank FD rates vary by bank and offer, and senior citizens often get extra. Compare with the FD Calculator.
  • Interest is taxable; TDS may apply.

Early closure

Not allowed in the first 6 months. Between 6 months and 1 year you get savings account interest; after that, a reduced rate.

Check the current rate

Small savings rates are set by the Government of India every quarter. The calculator starts with the rate shown on it; check the latest rate on the India Post website or at your post office or bank before investing, and type it in.

This is an estimate to help you plan, not financial or tax advice. Read the scheme or policy documents, and ask a qualified adviser for big decisions.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Interest differs from post office: rates change quarterly; check today’s rate.
