Running Pace to Speed Converter: min/km, min/mile, km/h and Race Times

What is it?

The Pace ↔ Speed Converter turns a pace like 5:30 per km into km/h and mph, or a speed into pace, and shows your finish time for 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon.

Who is it for?

Runners using pace on watches and speed on treadmills, cyclists, coaches and anyone training for 5K, 10K or marathons.

How to use it

  1. Type a pace in minutes:seconds (per km or per mile) or a speed (km/h or mph).
  2. Read the other units and the race finish times.

Pace vs speed

  • Pace (minutes per km) is used by runners: lower is faster. 6:00/km = 10 km/h.
  • Speed (km/h) is used on treadmills and by cyclists: higher is faster.
  • Type pace as 5:30, not 5.30: 5.30 would mean 5.3 minutes, which is 5:18.

Using race times

  • Finish times assume you hold the same pace the whole way. Most runners slow down in longer races; add 5–10% for a marathon.
  • Treadmills can read 3–5% fast or slow, and GPS watches lose accuracy among tall buildings and trees.

Typical paces

Easy jogging is often 6:30–8:00 per km for beginners. Walking briskly is about 10:00–12:00 per km (5–6 km/h).

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Type the pace as minutes:seconds, e.g. 5:30”: use a colon, not a dot.
  • Type a pace above 0. and “Enter the speed (more than 0)”: the box is empty or zero.
