Memory Card Match: How to Play the Pairs Game Alone or With a Friend

What is it?

Memory Card Match is the classic pairs game: all cards are face down, you turn over two at a time, and matching pairs stay up. Remember where you saw each picture to clear the board in as few moves as possible. Choose a picture set and 12 to 36 cards, alone or against a friend.

Who is it for?

Young children practising attention and turn-taking (the Numbers and Letters sets double as early learning), grown-ups who want a gentle memory workout, and grandparents playing with grandchildren.

How to use it

  1. Pick the Pictures: Animals, Fruit & food, Travel, Sports, Numbers or Letters.
  2. Pick the Size: 12 cards (easy), 16 cards, 24 cards or 36 cards (hard), and 1 player or 2 players.
  3. Tap a card to turn it over, then tap another. A match stays face up; otherwise both turn back after a moment.
  4. Find every pair. Press New game to deal again.

Scoring and tips

In 2-player mode a pair scores a point and the same player goes again; the turn passes only after a miss. Alone, aim for few moves: with 16 cards (8 pairs) a perfect game is 8 moves, and 12 to 16 moves is a very good result. Your best for each size is saved.

  • Work in a pattern, for example row by row, so positions are easier to remember.
  • Say the picture names quietly as you turn them: it really helps.

Errors and how to fix them

  • A third card would not turn: wait until the two open cards turn back.
  • “It’s a tie, 4 pairs each!”: in 2-player mode both found the same number of pairs.
  • Cards are small on my phone: 36 cards suit a tablet or computer; choose 12 or 16 on a phone.
  • My game, best time or score has gone: it is kept only in this browser on this device. Private windows, clearing site data, or another browser or phone start fresh.
