What is it?

The Energy & Power Converter converts energy (J, kJ, cal, kcal, Wh, kWh, BTU, therm, eV) and power (W, kW, hp, PS, BTU/h, tons of refrigeration).

Who is it for?

How to use it

1. Type the Value and pick the From unit.

kW or kWh?

• kW is power: how fast energy is used right now. A 1.5 kW heater.
• kWh is energy: power × time. That heater running 2 hours uses 3 kWh.
• One electricity “unit” on an Indian bill is 1 kWh. Use the Electricity Bill calculator to turn units into money.

Everyday conversions

• AC: 1 ton of refrigeration = 3.517 kW of cooling (about 12,000 BTU/h). A 1.5-ton AC cools at about 5.3 kW but draws only 1.3–1.8 kW of electricity.
• Food: the “Calories” on food labels are kilocalories (kcal). 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ.
• Vehicles: 1 hp (mechanical) = 745.7 W; PS (metric horsepower, used in Europe and India) = 735.5 W.

Good to know

BTU values are “International Table” BTU. Gas bills in therms or MJ convert the same way, but your supplier’s calorific value can differ slightly.

Errors and how to fix them

• A result looks hugely wrong: check the From unit. Picking a unit that looks similar to the one you meant is the most common mistake.
• Very long decimals: results show up to 10 significant digits; round to what you need.
• kW vs kWh confusion: power and energy are different groups; pick the right one.
