Equation Solver: One Equation in x or Simultaneous Equations

What is it?

The Equation Solver finds x for an equation like x^3 - 2x = 5, or solves several equations together, like 2x + y = 7 and x - y = 2.

Who is it for?

Students solving algebra homework, engineers and anyone needing the value of x or a system of unknowns.

How to use it

  1. Type an equation in x, or several equations one per line.
  2. Set the search range for one equation.
  3. Read the answers and the check.

One equation

  1. Type it in Equation in x, with one = sign.
  2. Set Look for answers from a range, e.g. −100 to 100. Answers outside the range aren’t searched.
  3. Read the answers. Check: putting each answer back in leaves a difference of at most … shows how exact they are.

Several equations

Type Equations, one per line, using x, y, z…. You need as many equations as unknowns.

Typing maths

  • Powers: x^2; roots: sqrt(x); multiply: 2*x or just 2x.
  • Functions: sin, cos, tan, log (base 10), ln, exp, abs; constants pi and e.
  • Use brackets generously: 1/(x+1) is not the same as 1/x+1.

Messages

  • Use one = sign in each equation.
  • That has no real answer: e.g. x² = −4 has only complex answers.
  • These equations have no single answer (no solution, or infinitely many): two equations are the same line, or parallel lines.

For quadratics with steps (discriminant and vertex), use the Quadratic Equation Solver.
