What Is DeskOrg? A Free Desktop Organizer for Windows

DeskOrg is a free Windows app that tidies your desktop. It moves loose files into category folders such as PDFs, Documents and Images, either when you press Organize Now or automatically whenever a new file lands on the desktop.

Who it is for

Anyone whose desktop fills up with downloads, screenshots, invoices and installers: office staff, students, shop owners and anyone who saves everything to the desktop “for now”.

What it does

  • Looks only at files lying directly on your desktop (not inside folders).
  • Creates a folder on the desktop for each category and moves each file into the right one, using your rules.
  • Keeps a log of every move, so you can always find a file again.
  • Optionally watches the desktop in the background and files new items for you.

The default folders are:

  • PDFs: .pdf
  • Documents: .doc, .docx, .txt, .rtf, .odt
  • Spreadsheets: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .csv, .ods
  • Presentations: .ppt, .pptx, .pptm, .odp
  • Images: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .webp, .tif, .svg, .heic, .avif
  • Videos: .mp4, .mkv, .avi, .mov, .wmv, .webm, .mpg, .m4v
  • Audio: .mp3, .wav, .aac, .flac, .m4a, .ogg, .wma
  • Archives: .zip, .rar, .7z, .tar and similar
  • Other Files: any type that isn’t in your rules

What it never does

  • It never deletes a file, and never overwrites one: if a file with the same name is already in the folder, the new one is saved as name (2).ext.
  • It doesn’t move shortcuts and programs (.lnk, .url, .exe, .msi, .bat and similar), so your desktop icons stay where they are.
  • It doesn’t upload anything: everything happens on your PC.

Is it free and safe?

Yes. DeskOrg is free under the MIT licence, with no ads and no account. Its files are code-signed with its own certificate, which is why Windows may show a caution the first time; see How to install DeskOrg.
