Why DeskOrg Didn’t Move Some Files

DeskOrg deliberately leaves some things on the desktop. If a file didn’t move, one of these reasons applies.

The reasons

  • It’s a shortcut or a program. Protected types stay put so your icons and installers don’t disappear: .lnk, .url, .exe, .com, .scr, .msi, .msp, .bat, .cmd, .ps1, .vbs, .js, .wsf, .hta, .reg, .dll, .sys, .ocx, .drv and .sed.
  • It’s a folder. DeskOrg moves files only, never folders, and doesn’t look inside folders.
  • It was busy. A file still downloading, being saved or open in a program is left alone and tried next time (the log says DEFERRED).
  • Your rules leave unknown types. If your rules say "UnknownFileBehavior": "Leave", types that aren’t in the list stay on the desktop instead of going to Other Files.
  • It’s one of DeskOrg’s own files (for example DeskOrgRules.json).

If you want it moved

  • Close the program using the file, then press Organize Now again.
  • To sort a type that’s protected or unknown, add it to your rules: see Change which folder a file type goes to. (Keep shortcuts and programs protected unless you’re sure.)
  • Check Activity & Logs › View DeskOrg log for an ERROR line explaining what went wrong.
