DeskOrg only moves files into folders on your own desktop, so nothing is ever lost. Here are three quick ways to find a file.
1. Look in the category folders
Open the folder for the file’s type on your desktop:
- PDFs: .pdf
- Documents: .doc, .docx, .txt, .rtf, .odt
- Spreadsheets: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .csv, .ods
- Presentations: .ppt, .pptx, .pptm, .odp
- Images: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .webp, .tif, .svg, .heic, .avif
- Videos: .mp4, .mkv, .avi, .mov, .wmv, .webm, .mpg, .m4v
- Audio: .mp3, .wav, .aac, .flac, .m4a, .ogg, .wma
- Archives: .zip, .rar, .7z, .tar and similar
- Other Files: any type that isn’t in your rules
2. Search in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and click Desktop on the left.
- Type part of the file name in the search box at the top right.
If two files had the same name, the second one is called name (2).ext, the third name (3).ext, and so on.
3. Read the activity log
- Open DeskOrg and click Activity & Logs.
- Click View DeskOrg log.
- Each move is one line starting with MOVED:, showing where the file was and where it is now. Lines starting DEFERRED: mean a file was busy and left for later; ERROR: means it couldn’t be moved.
The log is the file DeskOrg.log in your Windows temporary folder (type %TEMP% in File Explorer’s address bar).
Want a file back on the desktop?
Just drag it out of its folder onto the desktop. If automation is on, it may be filed again a few seconds later; turn automation off first (see Smart Automation) or give the file a type DeskOrg leaves alone.
