What is it?
Daily Maths Puzzle gives you a handful of numbers and a target. Combine some or all of them with adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and brackets, using each number at most once, to make the target exactly. Everyone gets the same daily puzzle in three levels, practice puzzles are unlimited, and every puzzle has at least one answer.
Who is it for?
Students practising mental arithmetic, teachers who want a daily board warm-up, quiz fans who enjoy number rounds, and adults keeping their maths sharp.
How to use it
- Choose Easy, Medium or Hard, then Today’s puzzle or Practice puzzle.
- Read Make this number: and the numbers listed under using these numbers (each one once, you do not need them all).
- Tap the numbers and signs, or type a sum such as
(7 + 3) × 5 − 2. The live result shows what your sum makes. - Press Check. Clear empties the sum; Show a solution reveals one answer.
Worked example
Target 52 with 7, 3, 5, 2 and 9: (7 + 3) × 5 = 50, then + 2 = 52. Normal maths order applies: brackets first, then × and ÷, then + and −. Fractions along the way are fine as long as the final answer is exact.
- Work backwards: is the target close to a multiple of one of your numbers?
- Great for classrooms: put today’s puzzle on the board as a warm-up.
Errors and how to fix them
- “That makes 48, not 52. Keep trying!”: the sum works but misses the target.
- “A bracket is not closed.”: add the missing ).
- “You cannot divide by zero.”
- “Type a sum, for example (7 + 3) × 5.”: the box is empty.
- “Unexpected …”: a character the puzzle does not understand, or two signs in a row. Use digits, + − × ÷ (or * and /) and brackets only.
- A number is not accepted: you can use each shown number only once (a number shown twice can be used twice).
