What is it?
The Area Calculator finds the area of a plot, room or shape. It handles rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, trapeziums, parallelograms, ellipses, sectors, rhombuses and an uneven four-sided plot.
Who is it for?
Plot and flat buyers, farmers, builders and contractors estimating materials, students, and anyone measuring a room or plot.
How to use it
- Choose the Shape and what your sides are Measured in (metres, feet…).
- Fill in the sides shown.
- Read the Area in square metres, square feet, square yards (gaj), acres and hectares.
Irregular plots
Most plots aren’t perfect rectangles. Measure all four sides and one diagonal (from the a–b corner to the c–d corner). The tool splits the plot into two triangles and adds them, which is the method surveyors use for four-sided plots. Measuring both diagonals and checking they give the same area is a good test.
Triangles
- Triangle (base and height): the height must be at a right angle to the base.
- Triangle (three sides): if the sides can’t form a triangle (one side longer than the other two together), there’s no answer.
Good to know
For flats, “carpet area” is the floor inside walls; “built-up” adds walls; “super built-up” adds a share of common areas. Measure carpet area room by room and add them up.
Errors and how to fix them
- “Enter the measurements”: a side the shape needs is empty.
- “Those three sides cannot make a triangle”: the two shorter sides must add up to more than the longest; re-measure.
