Audio Converter: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, Opus and FLAC

What is it?

Audio Converter changes audio files into the format you need: voice notes in OPUS or AMR, recordings in M4A, songs in FLAC or WAV. Choose several files at once; you can even drop in videos to keep only their sound.

Who is it for?

People whose car stereo or old phone won’t play a format, podcasters and musicians, students converting recorded lectures, and iPhone users making ringtones.

How to use it

  1. Choose one or more audio (or video) files.
  2. Pick Convert to (MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, Opus or FLAC) and the Quality.
  3. Tick Mono (one channel, half the size) for speech if you like.
  4. Tap Convert. Each file shows Converting …; several files download together as a ZIP.

Which format?

  • MP3: plays everywhere.
  • M4A (AAC): slightly better at the same size; good for iPhone.
  • WAV / FLAC: keep every detail (FLAC at about half of WAV).
  • Opus: the most efficient for speech.

iPhone ringtone: trim to 30 seconds with Audio Trimmer, convert to M4A here, and rename the file ending to .m4r.

Why does the first job take longer?

The tool uses a video engine (ffmpeg, the free engine inside many video apps) that runs in your browser. The engine is about 31 MB and downloads only the first time you start a job; after that it starts in a second or two. All the work then happens on your device, so a phone is slower than a computer for long or HD videos. Keep the tab open and the screen on until it finishes.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is opened and changed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Nothing is sent to us, and closing the page clears it.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “This file has no sound (or no picture) to work with”: the file has no audio track.
  • Loading the video engine (31 MB, only the first time)… takes long: the engine downloads once, then your browser keeps it. Use Wi-Fi the first time.
  • The video engine could not start …: the download was interrupted or blocked. Check your connection, turn off data saver or an aggressive ad blocker for this page, and try again.
  • “This file could not be read. It may be damaged, or a format we cannot open”: play the file in your phone’s gallery first. If it plays, convert it with Video Converter and try again; if it doesn’t, the file itself is damaged.
  • “This file is too big for your browser. Try a shorter or smaller file, or a computer with more memory”: the browser ran out of memory. Close other tabs, use a computer, or cut the video into parts with Trim Video.
  • “This file is over 1.5 GB: too big to process inside a browser”: trim or compress it on a computer first.
