What is it?
The Word Search Maker builds a word search in one tap. Pick a theme (animals, fruits, colours, space, body or school) or type your own words, such as this week’s spelling list. Choose a grid from 8×8 to 15×15 and a level: Easy → ↓ places words across and down, Medium ↘ adds diagonals, Hard (backwards too) adds reversed words. Play on screen or print it.
Who is it for?
Children practising spelling, teachers making themed puzzles for a lesson, and parents looking for a quiet screen-free activity once printed.
How to use it
- Choose a theme or Words and type “Your words, separated by spaces, commas or new lines”.
- Pick a grid size and a level.
- On screen, tap the first letter of a word and then its last letter (or drag across it). Found words are crossed off; the counter shows how many are “to go”.
- Press Print or Print with answers for paper copies, and New puzzle for a fresh layout.
Worked example
A spelling list of FAMILY, FRIEND, HAPPY, GARDEN on a 10×10 Easy grid gives a quick puzzle for a 6-year-old. For a 10-year-old, add eight more words, choose 12×12 and Hard so some words run backwards.
Tips for teachers
- Words of 3 to 8 letters work best for children.
- Ask children to write each word they find: searching plus writing reinforces spelling.
- “You found them all!” appears when every word is crossed off.
Errors and how to fix them
- These did not fit, try a bigger grid: …: long words or many words don’t fit. Choose 12×12 or 15×15, or use fewer and shorter words.
- Not a word in the list. Try again!: the letters you chose don’t form a listed word. Tap exactly the first and last letter, in a straight line.
- Print shows nothing: allow pop-ups for the site, then press Print again.
