Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator: Measuring and Health Risk

What is it?

The Waist-to-hip Ratio Calculator divides your Waist by your Hips and shows the Health risk level.

Who is it for?

Adults checking belly-fat health risk, especially South Asians, who face higher risk at lower weights.

How to use it

  1. Choose your Sex.
  2. Measure your Waist at the narrowest point and your Hips at the widest point, in the same unit, and type both.
  3. Read the Waist-to-hip ratio and the Health risk.

How to measure

  • Waist: halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, usually just above the navel, after breathing out normally.
  • Hips: around the widest part of the buttocks.
  • Stand straight, use a soft tape, snug but not tight, on bare skin or thin clothing. Use the same unit for both.

Reading the result

The WHO uses 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as the point where the risk of heart disease and diabetes rises. Fat around the belly is more harmful than fat on the hips and thighs.

Waist alone is useful too

For South Asians, a waist over about 90 cm (35 in) for men or 80 cm (31.5 in) for women is linked with higher risk, even at a “healthy” BMI.

Improving it

Regular activity, less sugar and refined flour, more protein and fibre, enough sleep and less alcohol all reduce belly fat over time. Spot exercises alone (like sit-ups) don’t burn belly fat.

This is general information to help you understand your numbers, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor about your own health.
