Volume Calculator: Tank Capacity in Litres, Boxes and Cylinders

What is it?

The Volume Calculator finds the volume of boxes, rooms, tanks and other shapes. It works for cubes, cylinders, spheres, bowls, cones, pyramids, capsules and pipes.

Who is it for?

Homeowners sizing water tanks, builders estimating concrete or soil, aquarium owners, students and engineers.

How to use it

  1. Choose the Shape and Measured in.
  2. Fill in the sizes. For round shapes, the Radius is half the width (diameter).
  3. Read the Volume in cubic metres, litres, cubic feet and US or UK gallons.

Water tanks

  • 1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres; 1 cubic foot = 28.3 litres.
  • Measure the inside of the tank, and the water depth (not the tank height) for how much water is in it now.
  • For rooftop tanks and sumps with sizes in feet, use the Water Tank calculator, which also shows days of supply.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the diameter in the radius box gives 4 times the real volume.
  • Mixing units: all sizes must be in the same unit chosen in Measured in.
  • For a pipe, Inner radius is the hollow part; the result is the material’s volume. For water inside a pipe, use Cylinder with the inner radius.

Worked example

A round tank 1.2 m across and 1.5 m high: radius 0.6 m, volume ≈ 1.70 m³ = 1,700 litres.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Enter the measurements.”: a box needed for that shape is empty or 0.
  • “The inner radius must be smaller.”: for a pipe, the inner radius must be less than the outer radius.
  • Litres look 1,000 times off: all measurements must be in the same unit. Don’t mix metres and centimetres.
