Back Up and Restore WhatsApp Chats on Android (Google Account)

On Android, WhatsApp saves a copy of your chats to your Google Account. Turn it on in Settings › Chats › Chat backup. When you reinstall WhatsApp or get a new phone, sign in to the same Google account, verify the same number, and tap Restore.

Why back up

Without a backup, if your phone is lost, stolen, broken or reset, your chats, photos and voice notes are gone. WhatsApp does not keep your messages on its servers.

Turn on backup

  1. Open WhatsApp › tap ⋮ (top right) › Settings.
  2. Tap Chats › Chat backup.
  3. Under Google Account, choose the Gmail account to use (add one if none shows).
  4. Set Frequency (on some versions Back up to Google Account) to Daily.
  5. Choose whether to back up over Wi-Fi only or also mobile data (Back up using cellular), and whether to Include videos (videos make the backup much bigger).
  6. Tap Back up to make the first copy now. Keep WhatsApp open and the phone on Wi-Fi until it finishes.

Storage space

Your backup uses your Google Account storage (the free 15 GB shared with Gmail and Google Photos). If that storage is full, the backup fails with a message saying you need more storage. Free up space in Google Photos/Gmail, turn off Include videos, or buy more storage. Only the latest backup is kept; each new one replaces the old one. Google may delete a backup that hasn't been updated for about five months.

Protect it with encryption (optional)

In Chat backup › End-to-end encrypted backup you can lock the backup with a password or a 64-digit key. Write it down safely: if you forget it, nobody, not even WhatsApp, can restore your chats.

Restore your chats

  1. On the new or reset phone, add the same Google account in phone Settings › Accounts (Passwords and accounts).
  2. Install WhatsApp from the Play Store and verify the same phone number.
  3. When WhatsApp finds a backup, tap Restore. Enter the backup password if you set one.
  4. Wait until it finishes, tap Next, set your name, and your chats appear. Photos and videos keep downloading in the background.

Restoring is offered only during setup. If you skip it, you must uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp to get the option again.

If it doesn't work

  • No backup found: check you added the same Google account and used the same phone number as before.
  • Backup stuck at 0% or fails: use Wi-Fi, charge the phone, check Google storage, and make sure Google Play services is up to date.
  • Old backup restored: the last backup was old; nothing after it can be recovered.
  • Local backup: WhatsApp also keeps a local copy on many phones, but moving it by hand is tricky; the Google backup is the safe way.

Safety tip

Never let a "helper" or shop install apps that claim to recover deleted WhatsApp chats; many steal data. Moving to an iPhone? See move chats to a new phone.

This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
