What is it?
The VAT Calculator adds VAT to a price or removes it, with standard rates for many countries built in.
Who is it for?
Businesses and shoppers in the UK, Europe, the Gulf and other VAT countries, and exporters quoting prices.
How to use it
- Enter the Amount.
- Pick the Country or rate (United Kingdom 20%, Germany 19%, UAE 5%, Saudi Arabia 15%…) or choose Other rate… and type Your VAT rate.
- Under The amount is, choose Before VAT (add VAT) or Including VAT (remove VAT). Read the Net (without VAT), VAT and Total with VAT.
Removing VAT correctly
To take 20% VAT out of £120, divide by 1.2 (= £100 net, £20 VAT). Taking 20% of £120 (£24) is wrong. The UK “VAT fraction” for 20% is 1/6 of the gross price.
Reduced rates
Rates change; check your tax office for reduced rates on food, books and other goods. Many countries charge less or zero VAT on basic food, children’s clothes, books and medicines.
Business notes
- B2B sales across EU borders often use the reverse charge (0% on the invoice, with a note).
- Tourists may be able to reclaim VAT on goods taken home.
Errors and how to fix them
- Wrong VAT amount: check whether the amount is before or including VAT.
- Reduced rate items: choose Other rate… and type it.
