What is it?
The URL Shortener turns a long web address into a short link through the free v.gd service (with is.gd as a backup). Short links are easier to share on WhatsApp, SMS, posters and phone calls, and they don’t expire.
Who is it for?
Small businesses sharing forms and catalogues, teachers sharing class links, event organisers printing posters, bloggers sharing posts, and anyone sending a long Google Drive, Maps or Forms link.
How to use it
- Paste the address in Long link (it must start with https:// or http://).
- Optionally type a Custom ending, such as
my_novel, to getv.gd/my_novel. - Tap Shorten link and Copy it. It is also added to Your recent links (saved in this browser only).
Worked example
A Google Maps link of more than 100 characters for your shop becomes something like v.gd/sharma_sweets: easy to print on a visiting card, and you can turn it into a QR code too.
Errors and how to fix them
- That doesn’t look like a web link. It should start with https://: copy the full address from the browser’s address bar.
- “The custom ending needs 5–30 letters, numbers or underscores (no dashes or spaces)”: change the ending, e.g.
sharma_sweets. - That custom ending is taken: pick another, or leave it empty for a random one.
- “The shortening service could not be reached. Check your connection and try again”: you’re offline or a blocker stopped the request.
- The link could not be shortened: the service may refuse unsafe or already-short links.
Good to know
Short links can’t be edited later. The recent-links list stays in this browser only; Clear this list removes it here without breaking the links.
