What is it?
The US Federal Income Tax Calculator estimates the federal income tax on your income. It shows the tax, your taxable income, your effective tax rate and your top (marginal) rate.
Who is it for?
Workers, NRIs and students in the US estimating federal income tax and comparing filing options.
How to use it
- Enter your Yearly income ($) and Filing status: Single, Married filing jointly or Head of household.
- Add Pre-tax deductions: 401(k), HSA… ($).
- If your itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state and local taxes, charity) are more than the standard deduction, enter them; the higher one is used (Deduction used).
Marginal vs effective rate
- Marginal rate: the rate on your last dollar. Moving into a higher bracket only taxes the dollars above the line at the higher rate.
- Effective rate: total tax ÷ income. Always lower than the marginal rate.
What’s included
Tax year 2026 brackets and standard deductions (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). Federal income tax only: no state tax, Social Security, Medicare or credits. Child Tax Credit, education credits and EITC lower your tax further; FICA (7.65% for most employees) is extra. Use the Take-home Pay Calculator for a full paycheck estimate.
This is an estimate to help you plan, not financial or tax advice. For big decisions, check the latest rules and talk to a qualified adviser.
Errors and how to fix them
- Doesn’t match your return: credits, state tax and FICA aren’t included.
