What is it?
The Tone Generator plays an exact Frequency (Hz) from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in different Wave shapes, sweeps between two frequencies, tests left and right Speakers, and saves tones as WAV.
Who is it for?
People testing speakers and headphones, science students and teachers, sound engineers, and anyone checking their hearing range for fun.
How to use it
- Set the frequency and wave shape; tap ▶ Play (use ½ octave down / Octave up to move).
- For a sweep, set From (Hz), To (Hz) and Over (seconds), then ▶ Play sweep.
- Set Length (seconds) and Download WAV.
Safety
Start at low volume, especially with headphones; high-pitched tones at high volume can hurt your ears and damage tweeters.
Errors and how to fix them
- “This browser cannot play generated sound”: use a recent browser.
- No sound at very low or high frequencies: small speakers can’t play below about 100 Hz, and most adults can’t hear above about 15–17 kHz.
Questions people ask
- Which wave shape should I use? Sine for pure tones and hearing checks; square and sawtooth sound harsher and test speakers differently.
- How do I test left and right speakers? Choose the Speaker setting for left or right and listen to which side plays.
Musical notes
A4 = 440 Hz is the standard tuning note. Each octave doubles the frequency: A5 is 880 Hz, A3 is 220 Hz.
