Transliteration: Type Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil and More Using English Letters

What is it?

Transliteration lets you write in your own language without a special keyboard. Type the sounds in English letters, like “namaste” or “sat srii akaal”, and see them in Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Nepali), Gurmukhi, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Russian (Cyrillic), Greek, Arabic or Urdu as you type. Copy the result into WhatsApp, email, a document or a form.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to send greetings or messages in their mother tongue from an English keyboard, students, teachers, and shop owners making signs or posters.

How to use it

  1. Choose the Script. It is remembered for next time.
  2. Type in Type in English letters. The Result appears as you type.
  3. Tick Use local digits (१२३) if you want native numerals.
  4. Open How to type (cheat sheet) for the full letter list, then copy or download the result.

Worked example

With Hindi chosen, type meraa naam {Asha} hai. to get मेरा नाम Asha है. Note that mera with one a gives मेर, so double the final vowel. namaste gives नमस्ते and hindii gives हिन्दी. In Punjabi, sat srii akaal gives ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ. For Punjabi, double letters such as kk become ੱ (addak) and n before a consonant becomes ੰ (tippi). Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam add the virama at the end of a word automatically. Arabic chat numbers work too: 3 ع, 7 ح, 5 خ, 9 ص.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere: the rules run in your browser.

Errors and how to fix them

  • The spelling is slightly off: the tool follows fixed rules, not a dictionary, so it writes exactly the sounds you type. Adjust the letters, for example kyaa for क्या.
  • A short vowel instead of a long one: double it, aa, ii or ee, uu or oo.
  • Soft letter instead of a hard one: use capitals for retroflex letters: T ट, D ड, N ण, Sh ष.
  • Names or English words got converted: put them in curly braces, {Asha} or {WhatsApp}.
