Subtitle Converter: SRT to VTT, Shift Times and Fix Drift

What is it?

The Subtitle Converter changes subtitle files between SRT, VTT and plain text. It can also move all subtitles earlier or later when they are out of sync with the video.

Who is it for?

Video editors, YouTubers, teachers adding captions, website owners using HTML5 video, and anyone whose subtitles are out of sync.

How to use it

  1. Paste subtitles, or Open a subtitle file (.srt or .vtt).
  2. Choose Convert to, set Shift times (seconds, e.g. 2.5 or -1.2) and a Frame-rate fix if needed.
  3. Tap Download file.

Example

Subtitles appear 2 seconds too early throughout: shift by 2. They match at the start but are 1 minute off after an hour: use the 23.976 ↔ 25 fps fix.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “No subtitles found”: paste the contents of an .srt or .vtt file (times look like 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500).
  • Subtitles early or late by the same amount: shift times by that many seconds.
  • Fine at the start, worse later: that’s frame-rate drift; apply the frame-rate fix.

Questions people ask

  • Which format does YouTube use? YouTube accepts both SRT and VTT.
  • What does plain text do? Removes numbers and times, leaving only the dialogue, useful for transcripts.

Practical tip

Always keep a copy of the original subtitle file before shifting times. Test a few lines at the start, middle and end of the video after converting to make sure everything is in sync.
