Story Reader: Picture Stories Read Aloud With Words Lighting Up

What is it?

The Story Reader is a small read-aloud library for children: eight short picture stories in English and two in Hindi. Each page has a big picture and large text, and the words light up as they are read. You can also paste your own story to have it read aloud.

Who is it for?

Early readers following words with their eyes, parents at bedtime, children learning Hindi or English as a second language, and teachers who want a read-along on the class screen.

How to use it

  1. Choose a Story.
  2. Press 🔊 Read this page, or ▶▶ Read the whole story to turn pages automatically. ■ Stop ends reading.
  3. Use ◀ and ▶ to turn pages yourself (“Page 2 of 6”).
  4. Slide Reading speed slower for beginners.
  5. Your own story: “Type or paste a story in the box below, then press Use my story.” Leave an empty line between pages.

Worked example

Paste three short paragraphs from a school reader with an empty line between them, press Use my story, then ▶▶ Read the whole story: the tool reads page 1, turns to page 2 by itself, and so on. Copyrighted books are fine for private reading at home this way, since nothing is uploaded or published.

Tips for parents

  • Pause before the last word of a page and let your child guess it.
  • Ask “What do you think happens next?” on each page.
  • Read the same story several days in a row: repetition builds early reading.

Errors and how to fix them

  • No sound when I tap: the words are read by your device’s own voice. Turn the volume up and silent mode off, and check that a text-to-speech voice is installed (Android: Settings › Accessibility › Text-to-speech; iPhone: Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content; Windows: Settings › Time & language › Speech). Hindi words need a Hindi voice; without one the tool says them in English or stays quiet.
  • Words don’t light up: words light up as they are read when your device’s voice supports it. Some phone voices read without word timing; the page is still read aloud.
  • Hindi story read strangely: Hindi stories need a Hindi voice on the device; install one in the text-to-speech settings.
  • My story is one long page: add an empty line between pages.
