What is it?
The Password Generator makes strong random passwords with your device’s secure random numbers. Nothing is sent or saved.
Who is it for?
Everyone: creating new accounts, changing a password after a breach, setting Wi-Fi and router passwords, and making a strong master password for a password manager.
Password or passphrase?
- Password: random letters, digits and symbols. Set the Length (16 is a strong default). Best for a password manager to remember.
- Passphrase: several random words, like
cloud-brave-lemon-river-dance. Set the number of Words (5 is strong). Easier to type and remember, for your phone, laptop or password manager’s master password.
How to use it
- Choose Password or Passphrase and the length.
- Tap ↻ New password until you like one, or Make 5 more for choices.
- Tap Copy and paste it into the site’s sign-up or change-password page.
A site refuses the password
- Some sites limit length (often 20 or 32 characters) or don’t allow certain symbols. Shorten it or turn symbols off.
- Some require at least one digit and one symbol: make another until it has both.
- Turning on the option to avoid look-alike characters (like 0/O and l/1) helps if you must type it by hand.
Keeping passwords safe
- Use a different password for every site. A password manager (Google Password Manager, Apple Passwords, Bitwarden) remembers them for you.
- Turn on two-step verification (2FA) for email and banking.
- Never send passwords by SMS or email; nobody genuine will ask you for them.
