What is it?
The Password Strength Checker uses zxcvbn, the open-source estimator built by Dropbox, which knows common passwords, names, dictionary words, dates, keyboard patterns like qwerty and swaps like p@ssw0rd. It shows a strength from Very weak to Very strong, estimates how long real attackers would need, explains the patterns it found, and lists simple rules such as “At least 12 characters”.
Who is it for?
Anyone creating a new password for email, banking or social media, parents teaching children about online safety, and small offices setting password rules.
How to use it
- Type a password into Password. Show reveals what you typed. The first time it loads the checker (about 800 KB).
- Read the meter: Very weak, Weak, Fair, Strong or Very strong (“Strength … of 4”).
- Read the three crack times: if a site’s data leaks (well protected), if badly protected (fast hash), and by guessing on a login page.
- Follow the ⚠️ warnings and 💡 suggestions until it reaches Strong or Very strong.
Worked example
Try the sample Summer2024!: it is rated weak because “Summer” is a common word and 2024 a recent year. Four or five random words, such as velvet-rocket-mango-quiet, score Very strong and are easy to remember. Never reuse a password on two sites, and turn on two-step verification for email and banking.
Is it safe to type my real password?
The check runs entirely in your browser; the password is never sent, saved or logged. You can also test one that follows the same pattern.
Errors and how to fix them
- “Type a password. It is checked on this device and never sent or saved”: the box is empty.
- Rules all ticked but still Weak: rules are not enough. Summer2024! has a capital, a number and a symbol, yet it is a common word plus a year.
- “…” is in common password and word lists or is a keyboard pattern: replace that part with something unpredictable.
- Nothing happens, or a “Could not load” message: the first use downloads the library. Check your internet connection, turn off an ad or script blocker for this site, and reload the page.
