Morse Code Translator: Spacing, Slashes and Unreadable Letters

What is it?

The Morse Code Translator works both ways and decides which way by itself: paste dots and dashes and you get text, type text and you get Morse.

Who is it for?

Students and hobbyists learning Morse, scouts and guides, ham radio beginners, puzzle and escape-room makers, and anyone curious how SOS and messages are tapped out.

How to use it

  1. Type text, or paste dots and dashes, in Text or Morse code.
  2. Leave Direction on Detect automatically, or choose Text → Morse or Morse → Text.
  3. The result appears as you type. Tap Copy result to copy it.

How to write Morse code it can read

  • Put one space between letters: .... .. is HI.
  • Put a slash ( / ) between words: .... .. / - .... . .-. . is HI THERE.
  • Bullets (•) and long dashes (— or −) copied from other websites are fine.

Why is there a ? in my result?

A group of dots and dashes did not match any letter. Usually two letters are joined because a space is missing, for example .-.- instead of .- .-. Add the missing space.

It translated the wrong way

If your text has only dots, dashes and slashes, it is read as Morse. To force a direction, change Direction to Text → Morse or Morse → Text.

Worked example

HELP 2 becomes .... . .-.. .--. / ..---: four letters separated by spaces, a slash for the word gap, then the digit 2 (two dots and three dashes).

Questions people ask

  • How do I send SOS with a torch? Short flash, short, short; long, long, long; short, short, short. A long flash lasts about three times a short one, with a short pause between letters.
  • Why does one letter come out as ? The code isn’t a valid Morse letter, usually because two letters were run together without a space.
  • Does it work for Hindi? Morse here covers the Latin alphabet, digits and punctuation. Write Hindi words in English letters first.
