Speech to Text: “Microphone Permission Was Blocked” or “No Speech Heard”

Speech to Text needs your microphone. If the browser blocked it, the tool shows Microphone permission was blocked.

Allow the microphone

  • Chrome or Edge on a computer: click the icon at the left of the address bar → Microphone → Allow, then reload the page.
  • Chrome on Android: tap the icon left of the address → Permissions → Microphone → Allow. Also check Android Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone.
  • Safari on iPhone: tap aA in the address bar → Website Settings → Microphone → Allow. Also check Settings → Safari → Microphone.

“No speech heard”

  • Speak a little closer to the microphone, after pressing Start speaking.
  • Make sure the right microphone is selected and not muted (headsets often have a mute switch).
  • Choose the language you speak in the tool before starting.

Windows and Mac settings

  • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  • Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → turn on your browser. Restart the browser afterwards.

Still blocked after allowing?

  • Close other apps that may be using the microphone (video calls, voice recorders).
  • Fully close and reopen the browser, then reload the tool.
  • Check the page address starts with https://; browsers only allow the microphone on secure pages.
  • Test the microphone in another app (a voice note on WhatsApp) to rule out a hardware problem.

Better accuracy

Speak in full sentences at a normal pace. Earphones with a microphone pick up your voice better and block background noise. Pause briefly between sentences.
