What is it?
The Map & Model Scale Converter turns a measured length on a map, plan or model into real-world size, or a real size into scale size.
Who is it for?
Students reading maps, architects and builders reading plans, trekkers using topographic maps, and model makers.
How to use it
- Under I have, choose whether your length is on the map/model or in real life.
- Type the Length and the Scale 1 : number (for example 50000).
- Pick the unit under Show the answer in.
Reading a scale
- 1:50,000 means 1 cm on the map is 50,000 cm (500 m) on the ground. 4 cm on the map is 2 km.
- House plans are often 1:100 (1 cm = 1 m) or 1:50.
- Model trains: HO is 1:87, N is 1:160; model cars are often 1:18, 1:24 or 1:43.
Common problems
- A printed or photocopied plan may be resized, so the scale no longer matches. Measure a known dimension (like a door, 0.9 m) to check.
- Screen maps (Google Maps) change scale as you zoom; use their own distance tool instead.
Worked examples
- On a 1:50,000 trekking map, the trail measures 7.4 cm: 7.4 × 50,000 = 370,000 cm = 3.7 km.
- On a 1:100 house plan, a room is 4.2 cm × 3.5 cm: 4.2 m × 3.5 m.
- A 1:18 model car is 25 cm long: the real car is 25 × 18 = 4.5 m.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to convert cm to m or km at the end.
- Using a printed map that was enlarged or reduced: check against the map’s scale bar.
