What is it?
The Long Division Calculator shows a long division worked out step by step, the way it is taught in school. It gives the quotient, the remainder and the answer as a decimal.
Who is it for?
Primary and middle-school students learning division, and parents helping with homework.
How to use it
Enter the Dividend (number to divide) and the Divisor. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.
Reading the steps
- Divide: how many times the divisor fits into the current part.
- Multiply: that digit × divisor.
- Subtract: from the current part.
- Bring down the next digit and repeat.
Writing the answer
- As quotient and remainder: 157 ÷ 12 = 13 remainder 1.
- As a mixed number: 13 1/12.
- As a decimal: 13.0833…
Check: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend (13 × 12 + 1 = 157). Teachers often want this check written below the working.
Worked example: 845 ÷ 6
- 6 into 8 goes 1 time (6); 8 − 6 = 2. Bring down 4 → 24.
- 6 into 24 goes 4 times (24); remainder 0. Bring down 5 → 5.
- 6 into 5 goes 0 times; remainder 5.
- Answer: 140 remainder 5, or 140.833…
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the 0 when the divisor doesn’t fit (the 0 in 140 above).
- Bringing down two digits at once.
- A remainder larger than the divisor means the step’s digit was too small.
Errors and how to fix them
- “Use whole numbers, with a divisor above 0”: no decimals; can’t divide by 0.
