Add Line Numbers: Numbered Lists, Quotes and Excel Columns

What is it?

Add Line Numbers puts a number, or any text you choose, at the start and end of every line.

Who is it for?

Teachers making numbered question lists, developers preparing code or SQL lists, office staff numbering items for Excel, and anyone wrapping many lines in the same quotes or symbols.

How to use it

  1. Paste your lines.
  2. Choose the Numbers style, Start at, and any text to add before or after.
  3. Copy or download the result.

Common jobs

  • Numbered list: choose 1. 2. 3. and paste your lines.
  • Numbers that line up: choose 01 02 03; numbers are padded with zeros to the same width.
  • Two Excel columns: choose 1 [tab], copy the result and paste it into Excel.
  • A SQL or code list: choose No numbers, type ' in Add before and ', in Add after.

Blank lines got numbered

Tick Skip empty lines; blank lines then stay blank and do not use up a number.

Worked examples

  • A shopping list for WhatsApp: choose 1. 2. 3., tick Skip empty lines, paste, copy. Each item gets a number, and blank lines between sections stay blank.
  • A SQL IN list: choose No numbers, add ' before and ', after. Delhi and Pune become 'Delhi', and 'Pune',. Delete the last comma before pasting into WHERE city IN ( … ).
  • Roll numbers starting at 101: set Start at to 101.
  • Code lines for a review: choose 01 02 03 (same width) so the numbers line up in a fixed-width font.

Common mistakes

  • Pasted text from Word may already have hidden numbering. Paste into Notepad first, or clean it with Text Cleaner.
  • Numbers restart only if you paste separately; to continue a list, set Start at to the next number.
