IBAN Validator: Fixing an Invalid IBAN

What is it?

The IBAN Validator checks an IBAN’s country code, length and check digits.

Who is it for?

People sending money abroad (to Europe, the UK or the Gulf), NRIs and their families, small businesses paying foreign suppliers, and accounts staff checking payee details.

How to use it

  1. Paste the IBAN in IBANs (one per line). Spaces are fine, and you can check several at once, one per line.
  2. Read the result for each line: valid, or the reason it is not.

What the messages mean

  • Should start with 2 letters and 2 digits: an IBAN begins with a country code (GB, DE, AE…) and two check digits.
  • Does not use IBANs: that country, for example India or the USA, uses other account details.
  • Has … characters: a character is missing or extra. Each country has a fixed length (UK 22, Germany 22, UAE 23).
  • Check digits do not match: a character is wrong or two are swapped. Copy the IBAN again from the bank’s letter or app.

It is valid. Can I send money now?

A valid IBAN has no typing mistakes, but the tool cannot confirm the account exists or whose it is. Check the account holder’s name with your bank before a large transfer.

How the check digits work (worked example)

For GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32: move the first four characters to the end (WEST12345698765432GB82), turn letters into numbers (A = 10 … Z = 35), and divide the huge number by 97. A valid IBAN always leaves a remainder of 1. One wrong or swapped character almost always breaks this.

Sending money abroad from India

  • For transfers to Europe, the UK or the Gulf, your bank asks for the beneficiary’s IBAN and the bank’s SWIFT/BIC code.
  • Check the IBAN here before submitting the form at your bank or in its app; returned transfers cost fees and take days.
  • For UAE salary or family transfers, the IBAN starts with AE and has 23 characters.

Common mistakes

  • Typing letter O instead of zero, or I instead of 1.
  • Copying only part of the IBAN from a PDF. Paste the whole thing; spaces don’t matter.
