Punjabi Gurmukhi Letters: ਪੈਂਤੀ, Dotted Letters and ਲਗਾਂ-ਮਾਤਰਾਂ

What is it?

Punjabi Gurmukhi Letters teaches the 35 letters of the ਪੈਂਤੀ (painti), in the traditional order from ੳ ਊੜਾ to ੜ ੜਾੜਾ. Tap a letter to see its name, a picture word and hear it, and learn the dotted letters (ਪੈਰ ਬਿੰਦੀ) and ਲਗਾਂ-ਮਾਤਰਾਂ.

Who is it for?

Children learning Punjabi in school, Punjabi families abroad teaching their children, Gurdwara Punjabi classes, and adults learning to read Gurmukhi.

How to use it

  1. Tap a letter to see its name and picture word; tap 🔊 Hear it.
  2. Choose a Letter to see it with each lag-matra.
  3. Take the quiz and Play again to practise more.

Practice ideas

Learn five letters a week, then read short words like ਘਰ (ghar) and ਕਮਲ (kamal). Pair it with Letter Tracing in Gurmukhi to practise writing.

For parents and teachers

Short sessions work best: 5–10 minutes a day, then something active. Sit with young children, say the answers aloud together, and praise effort, not just right answers. Everything runs on the device with no sign-up, no chat and no data collected about your child.

Errors and how to fix them

  • No sound when tapping 🔊: turn up the volume, switch off silent mode (on iPhone, the side switch), and check the browser tab isn’t muted. Sounds use your device’s built-in voices.
  • Letter name read in English letters: Sounds use your device’s Punjabi voice. If it has none, the letter name is read in English letters. Install a Punjabi voice where available (Android’s Google text-to-speech offers one).
  • Gurmukhi shows as boxes: update the device or browser for Gurmukhi fonts.
