What is it?
Punjabi Typing Practice teaches Gurmukhi (ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ) typing on the standard Inscript layout built into Windows, Android and Mac, without installing anything. Type on your normal keyboard and Gurmukhi appears; the on-screen keyboard shows the Punjabi letter on each key and lights up the next one with the finger to use. Tippi, bindi, addak and the dotted letters are included.
Who is it for?
Punjab government job and clerk typing test candidates, teachers and office staff typing Punjabi documents, and students learning Gurmukhi on a computer.
How to use it
- Choose Keyboard: Inscript (“Type on your normal keyboard: Gurmukhi appears”) or My Punjabi keyboard.
- Choose Practise: Letters with lagaan-maatraan, Words or Sentences (e.g. “ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਕੁਝ ਨਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖੋ।”).
- Type, following the lit-up key and “Next key: …”.
- Read your speed and accuracy, then press Next text; Try a sample (watch) shows a demo.
Where are the special signs?
- Inscript home row: ੋ ੇ ੍ ਿ ੁ (left hand) and ਪ ਰ ਕ ਤ ਚ ਟ (right hand).
- Matras come after the letter, as they are read: ਕ then ਿ makes ਕਿ.
- Tippi ੰ is the X key and bindi ਂ is Shift + X; addak ੱ is Shift + 4. The on-screen keyboard shows each one.
- Pairin haha (as in ਪੜ੍ਹ or ਕੱਲ੍ਹ) is Shift + the backquote key (`), typed after the letter.
For the alphabet itself, see the Punjabi Gurmukhi letters tool.
Errors and how to fix them
- A letter turns red, or you see “Oops: press Backspace…”: you pressed the wrong key. Press Backspace and type the right one. Mistakes you leave in lower your accuracy.
- English letters appear: with Inscript selected, switch off any Punjabi keyboard on the computer. With My Punjabi keyboard: “Switch your phone or computer keyboard to Punjabi (Gurmukhi), then type.”
- Dotted letters look different: ਸ਼ can be typed as one key or as ਸ + ਼ (nukta); both are accepted.
- Phone keyboard covers the text: scroll a little or turn the phone sideways. Touch typing is a skill for physical keyboards, so for real progress use a computer or a tablet with a keyboard.
