Digital Storage Calculator: Why a 1 TB Drive Shows 931 GB

What is it?

The Digital Storage Calculator converts between bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and PB, and answers everyday questions: how much really fits, and how long a download takes.

Who is it for?

People buying a phone, pen drive or hard disk, anyone wondering why a drive shows less space, students learning bits and bytes, and anyone estimating download times.

How to use it

  1. Type the Amount and pick the Unit. In every unit shows all the others.
  2. What your computer or phone will show gives the size Windows, Android or iPhone displays.
  3. What fits in this space (about) estimates photos, songs and hours of video.
  4. Enter your Internet speed and Speed unit to see How long to download it.

Why my 1 TB drive shows 931 GB

Drive makers count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows counts 1 GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰). So 1 TB (decimal) shows as about 931 GB. Nothing is missing. Phones also reserve space for the system.

Mbps or MB/s?

  • Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Downloads show megabytes per second (MB/s). 1 byte = 8 bits.
  • A 100 Mbps plan downloads at most about 12.5 MB/s, and real speeds are often 70–90% of that.

Good to know

“What fits” uses typical sizes: a phone photo 3–5 MB, a song 4 MB, an hour of HD video 2–3 GB. Your files may be larger or smaller.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Enter … (more than 0)”: a required box is empty, zero or negative. Type a number above 0; use a dot for decimals (2.5), not a comma.
  • Download time looks too short: check you chose Mbps (bits), not MB/s (bytes).
