Dice Roller: Roll Any Dice, 2d6 or d20 Notation and Totals

What is it?

The Dice Roller rolls virtual dice of any kind, with totals and a history of Last rolls.

Who is it for?

Families who lost the Ludo die, board and role-playing gamers, teachers teaching probability, and anyone playing a game that needs dice.

How to use it

  • Choose the number of Dice and Sides, then tap Roll.
  • Or type Game notation (optional): dice like 2d6, d20 or 3d8+2. “3d8+2” means roll three 8-sided dice and add 2.
  • Clear history starts fresh. Use 1–100 dice with 2–1000 sides.

Is it really random?

Yes. It uses your browser’s secure random number generator (the same kind used for passwords), so every result is equally likely and can’t be predicted or influenced.

Uses

  • Ludo, snakes and ladders and board games when the dice is lost: use 1 die with 6 sides.
  • Role-playing games: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20.
  • Maths lessons on probability: roll 2d6 a hundred times and see 7 come up most often.

Worked examples

  • 2d6: two six-sided dice, totals 2–12. Seven is the most likely total (6 ways out of 36).
  • d20: one twenty-sided die, common in role-playing games.
  • 3d8+2: three eight-sided dice plus 2, totals 5–26.
  • 4d6 and drop the lowest: a common way to make game characters; roll 4d6 and ignore the smallest die yourself.

Probability facts for lessons

  • One die: each face has a 1 in 6 chance (about 16.7%).
  • Two dice: a total of 7 has a 1 in 6 chance, 2 or 12 only 1 in 36.
  • Rolling at least one six in four rolls: about 52%.
