What is it?
Distance Between Places measures the straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance between two places on a map, with the compass direction and a rough flight time.
Who is it for?
Students with geography questions, people comparing house or job locations, travellers estimating flight distances, and logistics planners.
How to use it
- Search for the first and second place, or type coordinates like 28.61, 77.21.
- Read the distance in km and miles, the direction, and the estimated flight time.
Straight line vs road
- The distance follows the Earth’s curve directly between the two points (great-circle distance), like a flight path.
- Road distance is usually 20–40% longer, and much more in hills. Use a navigation app for driving routes.
- Flight time is an estimate at cruising speed, plus time for take-off and landing. Real schedules add taxiing and routing.
“Could not search places”
Place search uses OpenStreetMap and needs the internet. Check your connection, try a bigger nearby town, or type the coordinates directly (from Google Maps: long-press a spot and copy the numbers).
Uses
Check how far a new house is from work or school, compare two airports, or answer geography homework.
Worked examples
- Delhi to Mumbai: about 1,150 km in a straight line; by road about 1,400 km.
- Ludhiana to Amritsar: about 125 km straight; around 140 km by highway.
Tips
- For airports, search the airport name, not the city centre.
- For villages that don’t show up, search the nearest town or paste coordinates.
